Belgians eye energy investments in East Africa

Forty-three representatives of Belgian companies are visiting Kenya and Tanzania is search of investment opportunities in the infrastructure and energy sector.

“There is a lot of interest in Kenya in Europe especially now that Kenya is investing intensively in energy and infrastructure. Belgium is not an exception,” said the Belgian ambassador to Kenya, Mr Bart Ouvry.

Representatives from seven Italian and Greek firms were with the Belgians.

During the week-long investment forum, the businesses people will meet officials from the World Bank, Foreign Affairs and the African Development Bank.

They will discuss opportunities in Kenya’s Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia infrastructure project. 

Twelve of the firms work in the building and marine structures.

“I wish to draw your attention to Lapsset and to take a keen interest in this and other major infrastructures,” Mr Nelson Ndirangu, economic and external trade director, said.

He added that Kenya hoped to even the scales in the balance of trade.

In 2012, Kenya exported to Belgium Sh5.3 billion, mainly agricultural commodities, while it imported goods worth Sh10.9 billion from Belgium.

Mr Ouvry sought a quick resolution to the Economic Partnership Agreement between the EAC and EU.
